Kennel Technician

Part-Time Kennel Technician

Animal Control Department

FLSA: Non-Exempt

Pay: $15.00 per hour

JOB SUMMARY

Kennel Technicians are responsible for the daily care of all animals at Camden County Animal Control (CCAC). This position conducts proper cleaning and disinfecting of all rooms in accordance with Georgia Department of Agriculture guidelines and Camden County Animal Control standards to provide a healthy environment for the animals in our care. The Kennel Technician team provides our animals with love, compassion, daily exercise and enrichment and also facilitates animal adoptions, fostering and establishes rescue connections and networking.

MAJOR DUTIES

  • Thoroughly clean, disinfect, and sanitize all cages, runs, and related areas on a daily basis.
  • Responsible for daily feeding and monitoring eating habits of all animals.
  • Observe animal appearance and activity for general physical condition, obvious signs of illness, disease and discontent.
  • Report signs of illness, disease, injury or unusual activity to Public Protection and Compliance Manager.
  • Utilize animal handling skills to provide a safe and friendly environment for the animals at CCAC.
  • Groom and provide gentle, compassionate care to all animals.
  • Pull animals for spay/neuter surgeries.
  • Exercise and provide enrichment to all eligible dogs.
  • Perform needed cleaning and maintenance of all equipment and tools used in job assignments.
  • Properly stock and organize all animal holding rooms and feed rooms.
  • Make sure cages and animals are properly numbered and identified throughout the shelter.
  • Pick up soiled bedding and move to laundry area; Wash and dry towels, blankets and bedding.
  • Wash and sterilize water and food bowls.
  • Patrol shelter grounds daily, picking up any trash and animal fecal droppings.
  • Maintain equipment used to complete job assignments and keeping such equipment and tools in good working condition. Notifying management at to major repairs needed or new equipment necessary to adequately complete assignments. Keep equipment and tools put away in proper storage areas and ensure they are properly labeled according to specified room.
  • Communication between all departments in regards to animal placement, spay/neuter surgeries and overall animal health and well-being.
  • Sets traps to capture feral and domesticated animals, including releasing animals back to their trapped location.
  • Maintain a work week of up to 25 hours.

ADDITIONAL DUTIES

  • Performs other work as required or when directed by administration.
  • In the event of an emergency, all Camden County employees are considered essential and may be required to perform alternate duties.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS

The Public Protection & Compliance Officer assigns work in terms department goals and objectives. The supervisor reviews work through conferences, reports, and observation of department activities.

GUIDELINES

Guidelines include county ordinances, state laws related to animal control issues, and county and department policies and procedures. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.

COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK

  • The work consists of related animal care duties. Exposure to dangerous and fractious animals, animal bites, scratches, aggressive and sick animals.

  • The purpose of this position is to participate in the care of animals while at the Camden County Animal Control facility while also maintaining a clean, sanitized, and healthy environment for the animals and employees.

CONTACTS

  • Contacts are typically with coworkers, other county employees, veterinarians, shelter staff and members of the general public.
  • Contacts are typically to exchange information, resolve problems, motivate or influence persons, and provide services.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, bending, or walking. The employee frequently lifts heavy objects, heavy animals, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizes the sense of smell.
  • The work is typically performed in an office or outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee may be exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, contagious of infectious diseases, irritating chemicals, and potentially dangerous animals. Work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.

SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY

None.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education.
