Minimum Starting Pay: $21.86/Hourly

JOB SUMMARY

This position is responsible for coordinating the operations and services of the Bryan-Lang Archives including overseeing the accessioning, preservation, and accessibility of historical records.

MAJOR DUTIES

  • Processes historical records and manuscripts in accordance with current archival standards; arranges, describes, and catalogs materials.

  • Preserves historical records and manuscripts in accordance with current archival standards; monitors, documents, and manages environmental controls to ensure the stability of materials.

  • Monitors the condition of materials; documents concerns and implements preventative and remedial preservation treatment activities.

  • Responds to research requests from in-person and remote patrons.

  • Accessions and de-accessions records in accordance with BLA collections policies.

  • Catalogs published reference/research materials.

  • Researches, prepares, and implements procedures and workflows for analog and digital records management programs.

  • Selects materials for digitization in accordance with BLA policies and digitizes materials in compliance with relevant standards.

  • Manages the preservation of digital materials in accordance with NSDA Levels of Preservation guidelines.

  • Trains and coordinates the work of part-time and volunteer staff.

  • Prepares and presents reports to the Archives Board of Directors.

  • Advocates for the importance of the archives to ensure that archive collections, objectives, and policies are understood by the general public.

  • Researches and recommends the implementation of new or updated software and hardware tools.

  • Maintains and updates disaster recovery plans.

  • Prepares and monitors the archive budget; manages cash receipts.

  • Manages contractual and service agreements with third-party providers.

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION

  • Knowledge of archival data formats, specifications, and controlled vocabularies.

  • Knowledge of the principles and practices governing the archival storage of records.

  • Knowledge of collections management, digitization, an digital preservation software.

  • Knowledge of reference methods, resources, and services.

  • Knowledge of budget development and management principles and practices.

  • Knowledge of Camden County and early American history.

  • Knowledge of the identification, collection, arrangement, description, and preservation of historical records.
  • Skill in processing of a wide range of files formats and media types.
  • Skill in the training and supervision of personnel and volunteers.
  • Skill in conducting research.
  • Skill in the development and implementation of public education and outreach programs.
  • Skill in the analysis of problems and the development and implementation of solutions.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS

  • The BLA Board of Directors assigns work in terms of very general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures and the nature and propriety of the final results.

  • Guidelines include Bryan-Lang Archives standards and procedures. These guidelines require judgment, selection, and interpretation in application.

COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK

  • The work consists of varied archives management duties. The amount of materials in the collection contributes to the complexity of the position.

  • The purpose of this position is to manage the functions of the Bryan-Lang Archives. Successful performance contributes to the collection, maintenance, and accessibility of archival records.

  • Contacts are typically with co-workers, other county employees, librarians, archivists, historians, educators, curators, genealogists, museum directors, archaeologists, linguists, authors, land surveyors, and members of the general public.

  • Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, resolve problems, motivate persons, justify or settle matters, and provide services.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or table or while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, bending, crouching, or walking. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, and utilizes the sense of smell.

  • The work is typically performed in an office or in records storage areas.

SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY

  • This position has direct supervision over assigned part-time personnel.
